Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival was born nearly 1,000 years ago, around the reign of King Ly Thanh Tong. Through many ups and downs, the buffalo fighting festival gradually disappeared and was only held on a small scale. By 1990, the traditional Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival was restored.

Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival is not only a sporting event but also imbued with spiritual value and is the pride of the coastal people of Hai Phong. The festival has become an indispensable part of the spiritual life of Do Son people, taking place annually on the 9th of the 8th lunar month. The origin of the festival is associated with the belief of worshiping the Water God of the fishing people, praying for safe, windy voyages.
