Witness Vietnam's record-holding structures, proudly standing in the Mekong Delta's largest square.
Hung Vuong Square, Bac Lieu: A Masterpiece of Art and Culture
Nestled in the heart of Bac Lieu City's administrative center, in Ward 1, Bac Lieu Province, Hung Vuong Square is a striking architectural marvel. This magnificent and deeply meaningful landmark has been recognized by the Mekong Delta Tourism Association as a must-visit destination in the region, a true highlight for any traveler to Bac Lieu. Inaugurated during the first National Don Ca Tai Tu Festival – Bac Lieu 2014, this cultural masterpiece was built to support the province's long-term socio-economic development.
Spanning an impressive 366 meters long and 111 meters wide, with a total area of 38,554m², the square boasts a modern design prioritizing high aesthetics. It serves as both a prestigious venue for major provincial events, drawing crowds from all walks of life, and a vibrant hub for community cultural activities. The entire square is elegantly paved with natural stone. Within its expanse, you'll discover a collection of distinctive architectural elements: a towering flagpole, the province's unique cultural symbol, an artistic fountain display, a powerful symbol representing the three main ethnic groups – Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa, lush green spaces, and a touching monument to the sisterhood between Bac Lieu and Ninh Binh provinces. All these features come together to form a harmonious, highly aesthetic, and truly unique architectural ensemble, adding a striking focal point to Bac Lieu's youthful and dynamic urban landscape.

The Flagpole: Taking its place at the most revered spot in the square, the flagpole stands majestically over 20 meters tall, proudly displaying Vietnam's sacred red flag with a yellow star. On the first Monday of every month, a moving flag-raising ceremony is held here, attended by the Provincial Party Committee, local authorities, and citizens from across the province.
Bac Lieu Provincial Cultural Symbol (Stylized Đờn Kìm Instrument): This is the centerpiece of the square, a prominent feature covering approximately 5,000 square meters and standing 18.6 meters tall. The instrument is gracefully supported by five lotus petals, set within a five-pointed star-shaped pond. A mesmerizing water spray system within the lotus pond, combined with artistic lighting, creates a dazzling and magnificent display for the Đờn Kìm. This intricate blend of the cultural symbol's form with sparkling lights and a modern water music system beautifully enhances the overall aesthetic of the Provincial Administrative Center's architecture.
Bac Lieu province's cultural emblem beautifully combines a stylized Đờn Kìm instrument and a lotus flower. The Đờn Kìm is a cherished instrument in the traditional Don Ca Tai Tu art form, famously used by the revered late musician Cao Van Lau to compose his immortal masterpiece, 'Da Co Hoai Lang'. The lotus, Vietnam's National Flower, cradles the stylized Đờn Kìm, symbolizing Bac Lieu's distinct culture flowing within the nation's millennia-old civilization. The blooming lotus signifies the enduring vitality and growth of Southern Don Ca Tai Tu art generally, and Bac Lieu's unique cultural identity specifically. This remarkable work has even earned a place in the Vietnam Records Book Center as “The Largest Stylized Đờn Kìm Instrument in Vietnam”.

The Artistic Fountain Square: This impressive fountain features three sections with 68 nozzles, sending jets of water soaring between 1.5 and 3 meters high. The number 68 auspiciously represents “Lộc Phát” (prosperity and continuous development), symbolizing hopes for enduring growth in Bac Lieu and good fortune for all who visit. With nine distinct programs, these fountains create captivating “water dances” of varying heights, injecting a dynamic energy into the square and reflecting the vibrant, modern pulse of this youthful coastal city.
The artistic fountain square is thoughtfully designed to be a stunning focal point, enhancing the square's beauty during significant provincial holidays, parades, rallies, flag-raising ceremonies, cultural exchange events, and as a welcoming space for various community activities.
Symbol of the Three Ethnic Groups: This striking monument features three highly stylized sculptural blocks, reaching an impressive height of 9 meters. These interwoven blocks beautifully symbolize the unity, bond, and shared commitment of the Kinh, Khmer, and Hoa ethnic communities in building and developing their cherished homeland of Bac Lieu.

Etched onto the Symbol of the Three Ethnic Groups are various numerical groups, each representing significant historical milestones and pivotal economic, cultural, and social events of Bac Lieu province. These themes include: “Events of Bac Lieu Land”; “History of the Provincial Party Committee”; “Major Battles”; “Notable Cultural Events”; “Key Socio-Economic Events”...
The deliberate absence of accompanying explanations for these numbers aims to spark visitors' curiosity and encourage them to delve deeper. Local propaganda and press agencies, along with dedicated tour guides, narrators, and volunteers, play a crucial role in sharing and interpreting the significance of these numbers, linking them to Bac Lieu's most notable historical events. This approach ensures that visitors, both local and international, gain a comprehensive understanding of the province's rich history, thriving economy, vibrant culture, and social development.
The Green Landscape System: The lush green landscape surrounding the square is a vital feature of the provincial administrative center. It played a significant role in Bac Lieu City's recognition as a Type II urban area in 2014, contributing to its reputation as a “green, clean, beautiful, and civilized” city.
Flanking both sides of the square are two majestic rows of ancient, wide-canopied trees. Among them, Barringtonia (Đa lộc vừng) trees are strategically interspersed, symbolizing “great prosperity” and the flourishing future of Bac Lieu. The 54 trees stand for Vietnam's 54 diverse ethnic groups. You'll also find 39 vibrant Flamboyant (Phượng Vĩ) trees, commemorating 39 years since the liberation of Southern Vietnam and national reunification (marking the period from 1975 to the square's inauguration in 2014). The area around the Bac Lieu Provincial Cultural Symbol is adorned with a colorful array of flowers representing the four seasons: yellow Huỳnh Anh, red Bông Trang, white Mai Vạn Phúc, and purple Hoa Chiều.

Bac Lieu - Ninh Binh Sisterhood Symbol: This touching monument features a 176m² water basin, gracefully spanned by three interconnected curved arches. These arches beautifully symbolize the majestic, undulating mountains and forests of Ninh Binh, artfully blended with the pristine white salt fields that are iconic to Bac Lieu. This design powerfully conveys the enduring solidarity and unbreakable bond between these two provinces, a connection that has remained strong through the years.
Three exquisite stone blocks, sourced directly from Ninh Binh's famous pearl stone, are carefully arranged to represent both the majestic mountains and serene rivers of Ninh Binh, and Bac Lieu's fertile rice fields. The enduring quality of the stone material itself evokes a sense of longevity and eternity. Their arrangement also subtly references the Vietnamese proverb: “One tree cannot make a mountain – but three trees together can form a high peak”, beautifully illustrating the solidarity and deep connection between these two sister provinces from different regions of Vietnam. The tallest stone block bears an engraved message on its reverse side, commemorating the special sisterhood between Bac Lieu and Ninh Binh.

Without a doubt, Hung Vuong Square, alongside its impressive neighboring cultural and artistic landmarks – including the Cultural and Art Exhibition Center, the distinctive Cao Van Lau Theater (also known as the '3 Conical Hat Theater'), the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs, and the Mau Than 1968 Event Monument – has, since its inauguration, become a truly magnificent and meaningful architectural complex. This grand ensemble significantly enhances the aesthetic charm of this burgeoning young city, leaving an unforgettable impression on every traveler who visits Bac Lieu./.
