My Thanh Fishing Village - Peaceful Vitality and Unique River Culture on Tam Giang Lagoon in Hue
As a long-standing fishing village on the Tam Giang lagoon (Hue), Ngu My Thanh has a rich life and culture, typical of the river region. In the past, talking about Tam Giang lagoon was talking about a dangerous area of big waves and strong winds, but now it is a destination for tourists who love to explore.
"I love you, I also want to enter/Afraid of the Ho Dynasty, afraid of destroying Tam Giang". The old song seems to partly express the wonderful remoteness and immense obstacles of Tam Giang lagoon, a wild lagoon with strong waves and strong winds of Hue.
But few people know that for many generations, on the largest lagoon in Southeast Asia, all year round, only the vastness of sky and water can be seen, there are still fishing villages that have stubbornly lived from generation to generation, creating paintings imbued with the cultural colors and lives of those who follow the life of the river. Among them is Ngu My Thanh fishing village (Quang Loi commune, Quang Dien district), a famous fishing village located not far from Hue capital, about 20km northeast.

Ngu My Thanh is a famous fishing village on Tam Giang lagoon, Thua Thien Hue province. This village was originally My Thanh village, formed around the beginning of the 19th century. At first, the village was inhabited by households on the shore. Later, some fishermen from the Phu Vang and Phu Loc areas, about a few dozen kilometers away, came by boat to fish to make a living. Seeing that the lagoon was rich in shrimp and fish, it was convenient for business, so they stayed, and over time lived together with the people on the shore to form a ten thousand boat, called My Thanh Van.
The people of My Thanh mostly make a living from river work, catching fish and shrimp on the Tam Giang lagoon. All activities and accommodation take place on the boat. They go fishing during the day and only return to the shore at night to anchor the boat to rest. By 1990, to stabilize the lives of sampan residents and avoid precarious and dangerous living situations on the river, Quang Loi commune authorities mobilized people to move ashore to build houses and officially named the village "Ngu My Thanh".
Although life is now better off, the river lifestyle of Ngu My Thanh residents seems to remain the same. Every evening, villagers board boats to go to the lagoon to catch fish and shrimp. Making a living lasts from night until about 4 a.m. when they go ashore to sell. For that reason, the rhythm of life in Ngu My Thanh fishing village is fun and bustling, especially in the early morning. The buying and selling scene takes place on the lagoon, on the wharf, and on the village roads from the time people's faces are not clearly visible until around 7:00 a.m., then gradually disappears and then disappears completely.
It is the uniqueness of making a living on the vast and majestic river area of Tam Giang lagoon and the charming scenery here that makes many tourists come and want to experience...
